Spiekerman from Monotypefonts.com

It looks like the website sells fonts. They have a quote from Spiekermann “Study them. Note the approaches and failings. Sleep on it, then start sketching without looking at anything else.” I respect his philosophy on design. The website is interesting as it has a customer care section and a helpful attitude towards their customers.

I couldn’t upload photos (examples). Spekerman seems to post pictures he takes on his blog and writes what they are from his point of view. Though one is his Nokia advert and others are typography found in streets and somewhere indoor. There are some comments from website visitors. No replies? But he has persued a possiblility by doing something new and allowing things to happen or people to react. There are some good photographic pictures. And I should get the Stop Stealing Sheep book.

Article on Sherman in FRIEZE Magazine May 1995

Filed under: Heroes & Heroines PQRST — norihikokawata @ 10:40 am

It talks about Sherman’s work as being a ‘history painting’ of herseflf and the theme as “self’ and ‘other” as opposed to ‘woman’. Use of prosthetic doby parts with backdrops as well. Pictures of parts of doll represents ‘the not-fully-human’ and the similar concept of the painter of the pipe with ‘this is not a pipe’. Also she says that the way we see a human being is possible in real or unreal, i think. Unity of Sherman’s work comes with distortion and freakishness, which we probably possess within ourselves.
Rather than looking at individual pieces, the writer tells us to see the repetition in the series. Because this is how the meaning of the works surface.
Kim Paice (the writer) is an Assistant Professor at University of Cincinnati. She has a work with a squatting related scheme in China.

Sherman at BBC

Looks like there is a TV recording from 2003 or something at BBC. Nitin Sawhney joins in the discussion!

Some of Peter Saville Information from btinernet.com

He is known to be a advertiser, designer and an artist. With a simplistic modernstyle. He was born in Manchester in 1955 and is influenced by Kraftwerk and Roxy Music. To me, these music bands are also stylistic in the ways that they are sophisticated, romantic, mechanical and emotional. I like these groups too. Saville seems tohave been into early typographers such as Herbert Beyer (example below)

and Jan Tschicold (example below).

I have visited Manchester recently where Saville has a strong influence on the city’s art & design. There was something to think about from the over all impression of the place.

lots of typography, her original apparently, from pentagram website.

these SCHER fonts seemed to have 2 different elements.  one is what we see as ordinary fonts and then also, shadows and shades and 3-d essense added on to ‘the fonts’.

pleasing to the eye.  but too much information??
